On Saturday 20th December, local arts organisation, Festive Road, will be producing Paraffinalia: a site-specific Midwinter Fire Festival in Campbell Park. The event is free and celebrates the darkest of days with fire spectacles, processional lanterns, pyrotechnic effects and live performances, all based on the traditions of The Lord of Mis-rule and the The Bean King!
From 7pm audiences will be met by some extraordinary walkabout characters in the Open Air Theatre area and will be guided to the happenings beyond, where the parade of lanterns and illuminated structures will join the celebrations from across the park. There’ll be a chance to interact with installations and performers and buy some refreshments before the main event –a 20 minute show featuring fire performers, traditional re-enactment and live music from The Kettle band.
Create your own lanterns to take part in the Midwinter Fire Festival and Lantern Parade taking place on Saturday, 20th December in Campbell Park.
Two lantern-making workshops will be run, one on Thursday 11th December from 13:30 to 15:30, and another on Friday 12th from 15:00 to 17:00. These free workshops will be led by Festive Road artists, who will provide materials and support, and are open to all residents.
The lantern-making workshops will be held at Centrecom, which is located on North Row between North Ninth and Tenth Streets (not far from the Central Library). If you are interested in attending one of these workshops, please sign up using the form below:
